3 Way Ball Valve

3 Way Ball Valve

What is 3 Way Ball Valve?

A 3 way ball valve is the most popular multi-port ball valve.

A 3 way ball valve has three ports or holes for pipe or tubing to transmit gas or fluid through.

What Ports Normally Define in 3 Way Ball Valve?

Depending on the flow direction through the valve, these ports in a 3 way ball valve are typically defined as one inlet and two outlet ports.

What Makes 3 Way Ball Valve Popular?

A 3 way ball valve is popular because of its economical.

Using a three-way ball valve saves money and time by combining shutoff and flow direction control in one body.

How Does the 3 Way Ball Valve Controlling Flow Done?

Controlling flow through a three-way valve is accomplished by combining how the piping is constructed.

The flow path via the valve ball and the handle rotation of the valve ball are two important factors to consider (ball bore or porting).

How to Controlled Flow in Ways of 3 Way Ball Valve?

By using the correct valve type and arrangement, flow can be controlled to satisfy various process requirements, such as:

  • Turn off the flow entirely.
  • Mix flows from two independent sources.
  • Divert flows from one place to another.
  • Split the flow from one source to two different places.
  • Alternately restrict flow in one direction while enabling flow to proceed in the other.

What are the Different Internal Designs of a 3 Way Ball Valve?

A 3 way ball valves have a different internal design, the majority of 3 way ball valves feature valve balls with flow patterns listed below.

1. L-Port

  • L-Pattern Flow
  • L-Flow
  • L-Port
  • Two Direction

2. T-Port

  • T-Pattern Flow
  • T-Flow
  • T-Port
  • Three Direction

What Do the Internal Designs of 3 Way Ball Valve Refer?

Internal design difference determines the capabilities of a three-way ball valve.

It refers to the pattern flows or form of port produced by the ball within the valve.

How Does the 3 Way Ball Valve Works?

A 3 way ball valve operates by rotating a ball inside the valve body to line the cut-out passages with the valve’s inlets and outlets.

L-Port 3 Way Ball Valve

L-Port 3 Way Ball Valve

The “L” pattern cut-out in the ball of an L-port valve allows fluid to flow through the valve at a 90-degree angle from one port to the next.

T-Port 3 Way Ball Valve

T-Port 3 Way Ball Valve

A T-port valve’s ball has a cut-out in the shape of a “T” that allows it to send from one port to another.

You can also rotate the T aligns with the “T” form of valve, and the mixture from all three ports is manufactured.

What are the Differences Between an L-Port and T-Port?

An L-Port has the ability to send flow in either direction or to shut it down entirely.

Then, a T-Port will do all of the same flow responsibilities as an L-Port, with the exception that you cannot turn it off.

In addition, it is also possible to mix flows by sending or receiving flow in both directions of a T-Port.

The letters “T” and “L” refer to the opening pattern in the center of the ball.

What Type of 3 Way Ball Valve is Ideal to Use?

The ideal 3-way ball valve for your applications is determined by whether you anticipate the requirement to shut down all ports at any point during operation or to mix all three flows.

If it is necessary to close the valve totally, then an L-port should be used to accomplish this.

If you need to mix all three flows, a T-port is considered the best option.

How to Use a T-Port 3 Way Ball Valve while still Turning Off All Flows?

You must always install a separate valve between the two opposite branches of a T-port 3-way valve to completely shut off all flows.

In order to stop the flow, you must always shut the two valves, and the ball in the 3-way valve must twist so that it faces the rear of the valve.

Installing a tee piece with a single valve on each branch is a preferable approach.

Why are Handle Stops Important on 3 Way Ball Valves?

3 Way Ball Valve Handle Stops

3 Way Ball Valve Handle Stops

Handle stops of various kinds are used to put a limit on how far a ball valve handle can twist.

These are usually the handle extensions and the top of the 3 way ball valve body.

They accomplish this by interfering with the rotations of the handle.

Using these handle stops, you can prohibit the handle from turning beyond a predetermined range of movement.

A 3 way ball valve’s handle interferes with the valve’s rotation, limits it to a 90-degree rotation.

How to Determine the Flow Direction of 3 Way Ball Valve?

3 Way Ball Valve Direction Indicator

3 Way Ball Valve Direction Indicator

The handle of a 3-way ball valve will include a tee-shaped direction indicator that resembles the cut-out piece of the ball within the valve.

By looking for this mark, it is possible to determine which direction the flow will be traveling when it passes through the valve.

Why Won’t it Flow Mix Properly with a 3 Way Ball Valve?

In order to successfully mix flows on a T-port 3 way ball valve.

Both feed pipes must have the same static pressure head and be large enough within diameter.

So that when the flow rate increases, the static head does not change substantially.

Mixed flows from consistent height header tanks are simpler than pumped supplies unless the pumps have installed consistent pressure inverters.

If not, the pipe pressures and mixing ratios will alter over time.

It may take several hours or days for this shift to become significant enough to be observed.

Is it Necessary to Use Unions or Flanges on a 3 Way Ball Valve?

At some point, a valve is expected to become clogged or to break out completely due to wear and tear.

The existence of unions or fastened flanges on the valve body enables the valve body to withdraw for servicing or replacement purposes.

Without this capability, you must cut the pipe on two of the three sides of the valve.

Resulting in an extended outage for your plastic pipe system.

Unions are included with all of our 3 way ball valves as standard.

What Should You Know When Choosing a 3 Way Ball Valve?

  • L-Port valves are limited in that they can only divert the flow-through 90 degrees or completely shut it off.
  • T-Port valves allow you to direct the flow in whatever direction you wish, but they cannot shut off the flow.
  • A valve with unions or flanges on each of its ports makes servicing significantly easier.
  • The cut-out ball within the valve is represented by an arrow diagram on the handle’s top, which indicates where the ball is located.
  • When employing a T-Port valve to mix flows, the dynamic head of the two mixing streams must be constant.
